Hi there! I’m Mila Masters. I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, which is the perfect backdrop for the stories I love to write. If you’re interested in why I write what I do, I’ve answered a few questions below.
Why post-apocalyptic romance?
I’ve always been a big fan of historical romance, especially WW2. However, I’ve never felt adept enough to do all the research required to make sure I’m not getting all the facts wrong. In creating a post-apocalyptic world, I can introduce a lot of the aspects of wartime and, quite frankly, the worst parts of humanity. Those things certainly exist in our own timeline, but reading is often a way for us to escape our current reality. By no means do I think the future worlds I create are necessarily any better than the world in which we live in now. In fact, things are often far worse. However, what I think is most important is to convey wounded characters who face challenges and still manage to fall deeply in love, and of course to find their happily ever after.
Why reverse harems?
While I think reverse harems in real life would be incredibly difficult, it’s fun to create love stories in which they work. Most often, I think it’s far more plausible in a post-apocalyptic world, but I plan to try my luck at writing contemporary ones as well. What bigger tribute would there be to love if those actually managed to work, with each person in that harem feeling respected and loved?
Why age gaps?
We all have tropes we enjoy, and this happens to be one of my favorites. When I write an age gap, I want to be fully aware of the challenges, especially when there is a significant gap in age and life experience. I also like my heroes to not be the type of men to chase after younger women. In fact, I sometimes like it when they prefer a woman their own age, if not older, and it’s simple circumstance that brings a far younger woman into their life. Along with the steamy scenes I write, it’s important to me there is always love and respect between the characters. While this doesn’t always happen at the beginning, I want to convey it by the end of each story.
What other genres are you interested in?
I’ve always been a big fan of crime mysteries/thrillers where the focus is often on those investigating the crime, with some romance dropped in of course! Among a few of my favorite authors in the genre are Deborah Crombie, Karin Slaughter, Peter Swanson and Tana French. While I might not ever feel competent enough to write a contemporary mystery like they do (again with so much I don’t know about the legal system and police procedures), I try to weave some mystery and thrills into the books I write. And I do hope to get better at it!
Anything else?
I’m excited to write more books, and I hope you’ll come along for the ride with me!
